Polder?

One of the first things you may have noticed when you stumbled across my page was the url, and you probably immediately thought: what is a polder? (or maybe you didn’t, you know what they say about assumptions). Well, now that I’m no longer in school and don’t need to cite veritable sources, let me allow Wikipedia to explain what a polder is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polder

So yeah, a polder is essentially a big piece of land next to some water. Not particularly special in general, but I think Wikipedia’s first type of polder is particularly interesting and relevant to the Netherlands:

Land reclaimed from a body of water, such as a lake or the seabed

So many polders are manmade pieces of land. In the Netherlands, a particularly telling example of this is Flevoland. An entire province in the Netherlands was created through a series of dikes and drainings to create more land in the already dense region surrounding Amsterdam. There are many great Youtube videos out there explaining this better than I can. I will share this interesting side by side comparison, see if you can spot where Flevoland is.

Flevoland’s the big island almost smack in the center of the Netherlands. You can also see large land additions over time across most of the western portion of the country.

Why did I name my url polderbeholder? Well, I wanted something that was short, catchy, and related to the Netherlands without explicitly naming the country. Think this name sucks, or think you have a better one? Let me know in the comments.
